Meet William

Meet William, a student at Lifesong Harmony School.

William* grew up with both of his parents along with his 5 siblings. When William was 9 years old, his parents separated after many arguments that were not resolved. From that point on, William and his siblings were raised by their mother in Chipata Compound.

Chipata Compound is home to nearly all students at Harmony School. If you were to join them on their walk home, you would pass many small houses that don’t have running water or electricity, and you would meet playful children who don’t have the opportunity to pursue education due to financial constraints. William was in this very predicament before coming to Lifesong; his mother recognized the importance of school yet could not afford to pay the fees required at government institutions. Many days it was a struggle to feed her 6 children, let alone consider sending them to school.

“Before Lifesong, I never thought about my future.”

William’s life consisted of helping with chores around the house and playing with his siblings before starting school. Now, William spends his days in a classroom learning English, the sciences, math, and social studies to name a few. In his spare time, he can participate in extra-curricular activities like school choir or Bible club, spend time with school friends or complete homework. “Because of Lifesong I can become somebody in life.” For William, becoming ‘somebody’ looks like becoming a doctor, a dream he has had since he watched his uncle join the medical field. Seeing our students become passionate about a career goal is a rewarding reminder of why we believe free education is a vital aspect of orphan care. Through education, children are able to unlock sustainable opportunities for a successful future and break cycles of poverty that have often been experienced for generations in their family.

Still greater though, is the platform we have to share the Gospel with each child that attends our schools. William is one of many students who has become a Christian during their time at Lifesong. Because of daily discipleship and devotions, William continues to grow in his faith. While sharing his story he said, “It’s a miracle I’m here, by the grace of God.” One of his favourite Bible verses is Luke 1:37 which reads,

“With God nothing is impossible.”

Because of people like you, who support the work happening in Lifesong, we get to testify of the miracles God is accomplishing. William’s life is one of many testimonies that with God, nothing is too difficult or out of reach to redeem, restore, and renew.
